The first thing I noticed during Kevin Hart’s Netflix Is a Joke Roast was the symbolism not the jokes.

Kevin, his wife, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson all wore the exact same diamond necklace. Identical cut. Identical shine. Identical placement. Kevin and The Rock were even styled in almost the same silhouette. That is not fashion. That’s alignment.

In Hollywood, matching adornment is never accidental. It signals narrative pairing, contractual unity, or a coordinated storyline. So when Katt Williams made his “bromance” speech, it wasn’t random; it was his signature style of saying the quiet part out loud and the industry’s favorite way of exposure without ever having to own it.

But the symbolism didn’t stop there.

Nearly everyone positioned closest to Kevin carried some kind of public shadow: political scandal, industry scandal, moral scandal, or a long history of being adjacent to controversy. If you doubt it, go look it up. Except Regina Hall. She was the lone outlier, the only one whose public record is relatively clean, whose brand is not built on chaos, and whose energy did not match the ritual unfolding around her. Or did it?

Watching her deliver her lines felt less like comedy and more like someone reading from a line in her personal diary, with an invisible “or else” hovering just offstage. Teyana Taylor, equally perceptive, arrived, performed, and left immediately. A smart boundary.

And then there was the timing. The roast aired at the exact moment Kevin’s business turmoil was surfacing publicly, alongside the announcement of his new Netflix partnership, positioned as a career rebrand. That is not nothing.

Roasts tend to appear at inflection points. Career resets. Contract closures. Moments when the industry wants something from you. This did not feel like a celebration. It felt like a public humbling. A humiliation ritual disguised as entertainment, where the truth is smuggled in through humor and the people on stage pretend not to notice, even though their body language tells the truth.

The Women in the Room Told the Truth First

If you want to know what was really happening in that room, watch the women. Kevin’s wife laughed, but her body did not agree. Regina Hall half-smiled, but her eyes were terrified. Even a few of the women comics carried a tension that did not match the rhythm of the jokes. Tiffany Haddish was mysteriously spared from any insults at all.

Their discomfort was not about the content. It was the energetic mismatch, the knowing that something in the room was off and the humor was a cover.

Women do not flinch at jokes.

Women flinch at truths dressed as jokes.

On that stage, the truths were loud.

The laughter was the only thing forced.

PLOT TWIST: The Audience Was Not Innocent. They Were Participatory.

This wasn’t a passive audience.

This was a room filled with industry insiders, recognizable faces, and people who understand exactly how Hollywood works. Their laughter wasn’t naïve; it was complicit. They weren’t responding to comedy; they were participating in a cultural performance where everyone knows the rules:

The jokes are coded.

The truths are intentional.

The discomfort is part of the offering.

And the audience’s job is to laugh loudly enough to make it all look consensual.

The audience wasn’t confused.

They were in on it.

The Tone Was Not Comedy. It Was Degradation.

Let’s be honest. The roast was not edgy.

The jokes leaned on cruelty, humiliation, shock value, degradation, and the normalization of behavior that corrodes dignity.

It was vulgar, hostile, and spiritually low vibration. But his wife kept forcing the laughter; it was very uncomfortable watching.

This was not humor.

It was a spectacle of people performing their own degradation.

And the fact that some participants looked like they were fulfilling an obligation, not enjoying themselves, only made the ritualistic nature of the event more obvious.

The Timing: When Business Turmoil, a Rebrand, and a Public Humiliation Collide

Hollywood rarely releases two narratives at the same time by accident. The roast dropped at the exact moment Kevin Hart’s media company and business ventures were surfacing in the news for all the wrong reasons, and right as his new Netflix partnership was announced as a career reset.

That synchronicity matters.

Roasts historically appear when a celebrity’s brand is wobbling, a contract is ending, a narrative needs redirecting, or the industry wants a public reset.

A roast is a symbolic offering:

Sit still. Take the hits. Let us say the things you can’t. Pay the energetic toll.

So if you are asking, “What the hell is Kevin doing?” you are not reaching. You are reading the pattern. Roasts often function as transitional rituals rather than celebrations.

The Historical Pattern: Roasts as Career Closures, Not Comebacks

They mark the end of an era, not the beginning of one.

And the timing of Kevin’s business unraveling, paired with a Netflix rebrand, only sharpens that truth.

Here’s the part most people never connect:

The pattern is clear.

Which makes Kevin’s new Netflix partnership, positioned as a comeback, even more precarious. Historically, the comeback after a roast is brief. The “roast” supposedly clears the slate, but it rarely sustains the rebuild. I hope I am wrong.

Eventually, you have to consider the true price of participation and what a person actually trades to sit in that chair or participate. It is a significant choice to let people say the unsayable, to laugh at your own exposure, or to participate in your own public humbling actively.

You must ask if visibility, relevance, or a Netflix check is worth the cost of trying to redirect a narrative that is already slipping away.

The reality is that the “jokes” are just jokes, the smiles are not real, and the timing is never accidental. This roast was not harmless.

There is a high spiritual cost to remaining in rooms that require you to shrink, contort, or sacrifice your dignity just to maintain a sense of belonging.

I walked away from traditional entertainment PR because I perceived the cost of elevating one’s ego over integrity. The math simply didn’t add up for me.

Ask yourself: What are you sacrificing to maintain a sense of belonging in rooms that no longer fit?

For many who have watched her build Slutty Vegan into a cultural powerhouse and a blueprint for Black women founders, the move feels like a jarring pivot. It was loud enough to pull back viewers, like me, who had long dismissed the show for its cattiness. The tension lies in the mismatch: a serious business architect entering a space known for high‑octane drama, creating a friction her audience is still trying to reconcile.

Before I go further, I want to be clear: this is a strategic audit, not a personal critique. As someone who has looked to Pinky Cole as a blueprint for what is possible for Black women building from scratch, I recognize the magnitude of her impact. But as an observer of how stories are built, protected, and sustained, there is a clear atmospheric shift.

Slutty Vegan became a cultural moment. Pinky’s ambition and visibility fueled that rise. But the last year shifted the tone. Financial strain, operational challenges, and public acknowledgment that the business was not as stable as it once appeared created a different backdrop.

When a founder hits turbulence, the instinct to reintroduce oneself is real. Sometimes it looks like reinvention. Sometimes it looks like distance. Sometimes it looks like stepping into a new spotlight to redirect the narrative.

RHOA offers visibility. Visibility is not strategy.

Pinky knows television. She worked behind the scenes on The Maury Show. She understands how storylines are shaped. But producing the moment and becoming the moment are two different roles. Behind the camera, you can influence the narrative. In front of it, you are at its mercy. Reality TV does not protect nuance. It protects ratings.

There is also the relationship layer. Her husband, who typically carries himself with calm confidence, seemed a bit unsettled in the premiere episode. It was subtle but noticeable. Reality TV knows exactly what to do with moments like that. I’ve worked closely with former reality TV personalities whose marriages became casualties of the genre. Couple tension is one of the oldest tricks in the playbook, and once it becomes part of the storyline, the brand gets pulled in too.

Even with the best intentions, the genre has rules. Too much positivity gets labeled boring, and I believe that may be her play. The risk is not whether Pinky can handle the environment. It is whether the environment will handle her brand with the same care she built it with.

Black women founders do not get the luxury of public missteps without severe consequence. We build in public, succeed in public, and are made examples in public. When one of us rises, it expands the collective imagination. When one of us stumbles, the world treats it like a data point. That is why this moment matters. Not because Pinky is wrong for choosing RHOA, but because the choice carries weight.

The real tension is whether Pinky Cole is trying to outrun a narrative instead of tending to it. When a business is wobbling, the answer is not more spotlight. It is clarity and containment. RHOA is not containment. It is amplification. And amplification without narrative control turns private challenges into public identity crises.

Her capability has never been in question. She has proven that many times over. What is at stake now is whether this platform supports the story her brand needs in this season or exposes the parts that require protection, not performance.

There was a time when watching Tyra Banks introduce America’s Next Top Model felt like witnessing a shift. A Black woman leading a mainstream modeling franchise. A moment that looked like progress, especially for those of us who rarely saw ourselves reflected in that world.

The new Netflix documentary makes it clear that something else was happening too. It wasn’t just a show. It was a system. And many of us didn’t yet have the language to understand what we were watching.

The modeling industry has always operated on contradictions. Shrink but stretch. Soften but be hard too. Be editorial while remaining commercial. Be thin but never too thin. Be fierce but always graceful. The expectations are a moving target, and the women inside this industry are expected to adjust without question. How dark is this patriarchal system?

In that world, the tape measure has become more than a tool. It’s an active “groupthink” system that carries harsh judgments, where a belief system confines you to unrealistic weight restrictions and tears as initiation rituals. And the show packaged all of this as entertainment.

Tyra participated in that system and enforced it. And rewatching it now, her lack of accountability, even with the benefit of hindsight, isn’t just disappointing. It’s convenient. And convenience is disgustingly shallow.

PLOT TWIST™! Karma Never Forgets…B

The industry that spent years measuring women is now being measured itself.

In the documentary, Tyra shifts responsibility toward producer Ken Mok and unnamed network executives. But when the show was thriving, she wasn’t sidelined. She wasn’t powerless. She was aligned with the machine..

She repeats a phrase the executives told her often:
“There are no sacred cows.”

No sacred cows when it came to her friendships with her creative partners.
No sacred cows when it came to the cast.
No sacred cows when it came to the people who helped build the show.

And here is the part the documentary doesn’t fully name. The same way she distanced herself from Jay Manuel, Miss J Alexander, and Nigel Barker is the same way the network and eventually the industry distanced itself from her. The rule she accepted blamelessly became the rule applied to her in the same manner.

The lesson is simple.
Do not sell your soul for anything.
Not fame.
Not proximity.
Not the illusion of protection.

I wrote about this in The Spiritual Dangers of Fame back in 2023 (One year before #DiddyDidIt!). Fame can entice you to want to forget who you really are. The industry will still discard you when it is finished. Every. Time.

The judges learned that, too. Their lives continued after their brief moment in the spotlight, where they realized their closeness to Tyra was entirely conditional. When you finally recognize you were just a prop for someone performing friendship in narcissistic fashion, clarity arrives as a gift.

But the real harm wasn’t done to the judges.
It was done to the models.

The young women who made “great TV.”
The ones humiliated for ratings.
The ones still carrying the aftershocks.
The ones who wonder what their lives could have been if they hadn’t been fed into the machine.

Many of those women survived and even thrived. Some reclaimed their narratives. Redemption doesn’t always arrive with applause. Sometimes it arrives as a hard reality check - pun intended.

The documentary makes something else clear. Everyone paid. The models paid with their confidence. From my perspective, I believe they paid the highest price for the smallest slice of fame.

The judges paid with their reputations. And Tyra paid with the very legacy she tried to protect. The industry always collects. It doesn’t matter who the bill lands on. You will pay by any means necessary.

And then there is karma. Not revenge. Consequence. When an industry builds an altar to appearance, it eventually sacrifices itself on it. Trends shift. Empires age. Cameras turn around.

Now the culture is quantifying the system that did it.

At one time, this was true. My client roster screamed of matchmakers, matchmaking agencies, wedding planners, Black Bride Magazine (hey Mary Chatman!), and celebrity brides chileee. It was a time and kept me super “in these streets.” But here’s the reality check: a lot of us are over it. Those trends feel paused—maybe permanently.

And that’s exactly why CHOSEN feels so timely. It was born out of a decade-long celibacy journey and nurtured through years of intentional love, reminding us that depth, devotion, and emotional intelligence are not just personal values—they’re becoming cultural ones. As quick flings fade, what rises is a hunger for sacred connection, for choosing ourselves first, and for building relationships that can withstand the ache and still grow.

💔 The Ache Behind the Swipe

I got that memo a decade earlier—call it intuition, divine timing, or heartbreak burnout. My wake‑up call came at the start of my celibacy journey around 2010/2011. I wasn’t searching for any kind of love. I was searching for depth: a love strong enough to stand in the ache with me and not flinch.

Maybe it was the magic of early 90s R&B—when even the rough edges of rap and soul made room for courtship and romance, even if it was really covering up being a plea for desperate, possessive, lusty-love. Or maybe it was watching my parents’ generation grind it out through “thick and thin.” Either way, I grew up believing love had to mean depth, devotion, and long-suffering—that longing for devotion shaped how I saw love—and why shallow trends never satisfied me.

Shallow dating culture isn’t just tired—it’s being replaced by a craving for the real thing. The endless swipes and surface‑level encounters leave an ache we rarely name. But there is another path: the sacred pause of celibacy, a deliberate choice that reclaims worth and resets the rhythm of love. To be chosen—for healing, for wholeness—is not about chasing; it’s about choosing yourself first, and letting connection rise from that sacred ground.

🌍 A Pandemic Love Story

PLOT TWIST: I met my husband online – on a dating site in March of 2020 - two weeks ahead of what would become a “global pandemic”. Our first six months together unfolded across continents—me in Atlanta, him in Lagos, Nigeria—with only FaceTime and faith holding the line.

Thanks to the new WFH mandate, we built a relationship in a VR space (before this was a thing) and hoursssss of sacred conversations, not crowded bars and no need for me to yearn for traditional “date nights” – ain’t God good?! Seriously. We built trust without touch.

Maybe that’s the plot twist we all needed: the death of performative love and the slow, steady rise of something sacred.

A love that doesn’t just look good in photos, but feels good in the quiet moments.
A love measured not by diamonds or dinners, but by devotion, depth, and the courage to stay present when it’s hard.

This is the new narrative: women choosing themselves first, then choosing partners who honor that wholeness.

There’s a strange magic in the way some stories go viral and spread. I thought about this while watching Carlos King’s recent sit-down with R&B crooner, “O’Marion’s” Apryl Jones. Yes, that one from the Love & Hip Hop Hollywood. If you’ve only followed her story from the outside, you probably think you know how it goes: she, a reality TV star, in a celebrity relationship, and that infamous plot twist—having the nerve to be in a relationship with her children’s father’s bandmate. Now, that was a mouthful… 😖😬

The press and social media had a field day. Betrayal! Scandal! His followers, her followers, and even the bots predictably lost their minds. But here’s the thing nobody talks about: behind-the-scenes doesn’t stop at the plot twist.

What I truly loved about this interview was how Carlos King handled it and how poised she was about all of it. It wasn’t about digging for dirt or trying to squeeze out a viral soundbite. He sat in those moments with Apryl, with compassion and empathy in the way he listened. He gave her room to breathe — and plenty of compliments — maybe that was it too. But whatever it was, it was great to allow her to advocate for being human, admitting to her mistakes, regrets and her growth. We need more of that — none of us are without our stains.

This is the part PR doesn’t usually show you. In the headlines, people become characters in a plotline, frozen at the moment of the “twist.” But real transformation happens in the sacred quiet, when no one’s watching.

It got me thinking about the plot twists in my own life—those moments when everything changed, and not always for the better from the looks of things, but I’ve learned not to trust what it looks like - ever.

I’ve had my share of brutal betrayals and I’ve made my own mistakes, and plenty of people have misunderstood my POV—most of them only catching the highlight reel.

There were times, especially when I slipped into victim mode and handed over my power, that I felt trapped inside someone else’s narrative, playing a part I never asked for.

Here’s the secret: every good story has to have a plot twist. But a plot twist isn’t the end—it’s just the turn. You get to decide what comes next. I believe that’s what Apryl Jones is doing, and it’s what I had to learn to do, too.

It’s easy to get trapped in the story that’s told about you. It’s harder—and braver—to do the inner work it takes to move past the pain, to honor your own journey, and to decide what comes next.

It’s been a year that has forced me to examine every corner of my life as it unfolded. I lost someone very close—my wonderful stepfather (RIP). Our family celebrated a new birth (Welcome, Nephew!)—a reminder that life always finds a way to come full circle. My mom and I walked away from a scary car accident, which was actually a blessing in disguise, as we ended up with a new ride (after being told two days prior by the dealership that it was time to upgrade!).

You know how social media works – you're scrolling, and suddenly something stops you in your tracks. For me, it was an Instagram Reel using Solange's "Stay" as its soundtrack. That effortless cool, that undeniable vibe that makes you think, "damn, Solange really is that girl." And just like that, I'm thinking about how she's mastered something far more elusive than fame: cultural resonance.

There's something masterful about how Solange has positioned herself in the cultural landscape. While others might have fought against predetermined narratives or tried to compete in the pop arena, she chose to build her own playing field entirely. It's brand strategy at its most authentic—when the strategy is simply being unapologetically yourself.

Take "Cranes in the Sky," which dropped in 2016 as part of "A Seat at the Table." It landed during a summer when the country was reeling from the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.

While the world was shouting and grieving, Solange gave us something else entirely: a gentle, aching meditation on Black pain, healing, and resilience. "I tried to drink it away... I tried to dance it away... I tried to work it away," she sang, capturing the exhaustion of living in a country that keeps handing you new wounds. When the song won her a Grammy, it felt less like a music industry stamp and more like the culture saying, "We see you."

The genius wasn't just in what she said, but in how she said it. The ethereal production, the vocals—it was a protest song wrapped in poetry, a political statement delivered through personal confession. The track became an anthem not just for individual sorrow, but on an individual level, it was a salve for me at that time, and also for a community trying to process generational trauma while still daring to dream of joy. That's the thing about Solange's brand—it's built on substance, not simply soundbites.

Through Saint Heron, which she founded in 2013, she's been steadily building a cultural institution that extends far beyond music. Her work is as much about making space for other Black creatives as it is about her own output. And now, in true Solange fashion, she’s popped backout in Houston, curating a series of performances quietly turning the spotlight on her hometown’s creative communities and deep musical roots.

What makes Solange's brand so fascinating is how it stands in beautiful contrast to her sister's pop cultural dominance. While Beyoncé commands the spotlight with arena-filling spectacle (and does it magnificently), Solange bends light itself, creating prisms where art, culture, and the ethereal intersect.

She doesn't chase the spotlight—she transforms it into something artistically new every time. The timing of this reflection feels especially poignant as her mother, Tina Knowles, just wrapped up her book tour promoting "Matriarch," reminding us that from one source can come such beautifully different forms of power. And it’s not lost on me: the way all three of them are out here, each promoting a project, strategically galvanizing the country’s attention. Genius.

The brand lesson here? True influence doesn't always shout—sometimes it hums at a frequency that makes everything around it vibrate differently. Solange has built her brand not by chasing trends or fighting comparisons, but by consistently choosing depth over display, intention over attention. In a cultural landscape obsessed with being seen, she's created a brand that makes people stop and really look.

What's next for Solange? If past performance indicates future results, it won't be anything we expect. And that's exactly why we keep watching. Because in a world of calculated brand moves and careful positioning, she's showing us what it looks like when your brand strategy is simply Being.
